Alcohol-related stories told at Wednesday’s ‘silent memorial’

Going along with this year’s Veishea theme, “Time for Change,” and students pledging to keep the celebration alcohol-free, a “silent memorial” will take place to remember those people who have been affected by alcohol.

The project is titled “Hang It Up! The Jean Project.”

Through this project, Iowa State students will be given the opportunity to tell their stories of how alcohol and alcohol-related events have affected their lives, said Elizabeth Gries, project director.

Students who would like to participate in The Jean Project are asked to submit a pair of denim jeans and include a written story about their experiences with alcohol, Gries said.

The stories and jeans will be displayed together on a clothesline that will run through central campus, from Curtiss to Beardshear Halls. The items will be on display starting today through the Veishea weekend.

Gries added that the blue jeans and stories will not be returned to contributors because the project will be continue across the state.

Each story will remain with the pair of jeans it was submitted with, Gries said.

She said she is very optimistic The Jean Project’s committee will reach its projected goal of 500 pairs of jeans.

Even after the Veishea celebration, students may continue to donate their jeans and stories to the project, she said.

Those interested in participating in the silent memorial may contact Elizabeth Gries at 268-9540, or call the Veishea office at 294-1026.
