Alpha Sigma Phi marks one-year anniversary

The Iowa State chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity will celebrate its one-year anniversary Saturday.

“We are very happy to have made it this far. It has been a year to remember,” said James McNab, sophomore in electronic media studies.

Alpha Sigma Phi has been on campus since 1920 but was closed in 1993. The current members started the chapter again in 1995, but it wasn’t chartered until last year.

“When we started again, it was with all new members. No one affiliated with the old chapter is affiliated with the new one,” said Matthew Mather, Alpha Sigma Phi president.

The new chapter is also substance-free, he said.

The men will not have a big ceremony to celebrate their anniversary. Mather, junior in computer engineering, said the house celebrated earlier this year with a formal.

Alpha Sigma Phi emphasizes service and education in their house, Mather said, and this year the men have been involved in helping coach Special Olympics, tutoring at Ames Middle School and helping Boy Scouts earn merit badges.

“We really have to look for members that normally wouldn’t join a fraternity,” he said. “We look for those who are dedicated to the community.”

In addition to serving the residents of Ames, the men are also heavily involved in the greek community.

They have placed in the top three at Greek Week for the past two years, including a first-place finish this year when they tied with Beta Sigma Psi and Kappa Delta.

The house also ranks third in grade point average among all fraternities, with a 3.02.

“I am really proud of how far we have come in the past year. We have brought many new faces into the greek system and developed a strong brotherhood,” Mather said.
