Chance for romance, weekend getaway

For those feeling burned out by the endless stream of projects, papers and tests this semester, there is an event this Friday that will help relieve the stress.

The Inter-Residence Hall Association and Variations in Better Education for Students (VIBES) have come up with a stress-relief option for this weekend — a vacation.

The two organizations are sponsoring a dance that will be held at State Gym on Friday from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., in which two lucky couples will have the opportunity to win an exotic weekend vacation.

According to a VIBES press release, two couples will be whisked away to a pre-chosen surprise destinations in a warm climate. Airfare, hotel accommodations and spending cash will be provided to the lucky winners, all for the dance admission price of $1.

“Basically, two couples get to go on vacation somewhere in the U.S. in a warm climate,” said Sarah Bailey, member of VIBES and sophomore in pre-business. “What we mean by suitcase dance is that they can leave right after their names are drawn at the dance if their suitcases are packed.”

Although it sounds original, the suitcase dance is actually not a new concept, said Terri Houston, VIBES adviser.

“This is something many colleges and universities do,” she said. “It’s a neat fund-raiser, and a neat way for people to come together.”

The dance also serves a greater purpose in that it provides a way for people to celebrate Veishea without drinking, Houston said.

The proceeds from the dance will be donated to the Ames ACCESS Assault Care Center, a non-profit crisis center for women.

Houston and Bailey are optimistic about the dance.

“It’s going to be fun,” Bailey said. “There will be munchies and pop at the dance, and we have done a lot of advertising for it, so I think a lot of people will be there.”

Houston agreed. “We are looking for a good turnout,” she said.
