ISU goes 1-3 in weekend play

The Cyclone baseball team went 1-3 over the weekend on a southern trip to Louisiana in the Lake Area Classic.

Iowa State started the tournament off with a 7-5 win over Louisiana Tech on Friday. ISU closer Steve Larkin sealed the extra-inning victory by striking out the final two Tech batters.

Shawn Leimbek went 2-for-4 with a homerun and three RBI to lead the Cyclones.

On Saturday, the Cyclones lost a pair of games to McNeese State, 4-2 and 20-9.

In the opener, Shawn Sedlacek took the loss despite striking out eight over five innings.

Leading hitters for ISU included Aaron Runk, Jeff Duncan, Matt McDonough and Doug Kinsel, who had two hits.

Leimbek added his second homerun in two days in the ninth inning, but the solo shot was not enough to bring ISU back.

The second clash between the clubs panned out much differently. McNeese pounded out eight extra base hits, and ISU committed four errors.

ISU pitcher Brad Waldron fell to 1-2 with the loss.

Bill Uelmen went 3-for-5 with two doubles and five RBI to lead the Cyclone offense.

Sunday’s match against Ohio State resulted in a 10-3 loss. ISU is now 3-5 on the season.
