Rec center to replace carpeting in May

Iowa State students who use the Lied Recreation Center this summer may notice the building’s new look.

Steve Vanderkamp, associate director of recreation services, said carpeting on the first and third floors of the center will soon be replaced.

He said the present carpeting is eight years old and is due for replacement.

The carpeting will be replaced with a rubberized material which will last much longer than the present carpeting.

The weight and fitness, stretching and aerobics and common areas will be affected by this project.

During the carpet replacement, several sections of the building may be closed to allow the carpet glue to dry, Vanderkamp said.

He said the start date for this project is tentatively set for May 9, and remodeling is expected to last from two to three weeks.

Because this project will begin after many students have left for the summer, Vanderkamp said the project should not interfere with any activities taking place at the recreation facility.

He said his goal is to minimize the inconvenience to students who use the center.

Estimated cost of the floor replacement has not been determined; however, a reserve fund and money from student fees will be used for the project.
