Diversity workshop to bridge China, ISU

In keeping with its goal of diversity in university programs and in the Ames community, Iowa State has incorporated a workshop featuring distinguished guests from China and Washington D.C.

Information will be distributed Tuesday about the workshop, which will be hosted by ISU’s Office of the Provost. The program will be held on April 10, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Scheman Building.

While most of the speakers have not been determined, they will include business leaders from China as well as high officials from the Chinese Embassy in Washington D.C., said Glen Schrader, coordinator of the workshop and professor of chemical engineering.

Schrader added that the workshop will feature panel discussions and speakers from ISU, including President Martin Jischke, who will speak at the workshop’s noon luncheon.

The workshop is not open to students, but ISU faculty and staff and members of the Ames business community are welcome.

Schrader said the workshop highlights three objectives.

“The agenda set for the day will focus on identifying new initiatives and programs at Iowa State University, identifying cross-cutting objectives among colleges, departments and centers and encouraging a network of visiting scholars between China and ISU,” Schrader said in a press release.

The event also will “reach out to the business community and cultural community that is interested in China,” he said. In addition, some issues that will be addressed include environmental concerns and the world bank.

Registration information will be mailed on Tuesday to those who expressed interest in a survey conducted last fall.
