March 4, 1998
Based on their contributions to the gender equity at Iowa State, four individuals have received the 1998 Carrie Chapman Catt Gender Equity Awards.
The awards, which were announced last Friday, include $100 and an honorary plaque. Their names also will be displayed on a plaque in the Margaret Sloss Women’s Center, said Pamela Thomas, director of the Women’s Center.
To qualify, applicants must have been a member of either the Ames or Iowa State communities and must have demonstrated outstanding work toward achieving gender equity.
Sharon Haselhoff, a clerk for Bill Bernau, Ames representative to the Iowa House, received the award for being a student activist on campus and for her work with the Women’s History Month and the Women’s League.
Sine Anahita, graduate student and coordinator of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Student Services was a recipient for her work with LGBTAA in the initiation of the Safe Zone project.
Randall Huff achieved the award for his cutting-edge classroom work with gender issues, and Jane Vallier, adjunct associate professor of journalism and mass communication, was honored for her work with gender communication on campus, Thomas said.
