Scarlet Life laced with sunshine

Ben Jones

During the last six months, My Scarlet Life has gone a long way towards jumping on the fast track to fame and fortune.

The group recently released “Buzzbomb,” which has garnered the group critical acclaim across the Midwest.

However, My Scarlet Life didn’t go into the studio purposefully trying to make a CD that was more mellow in tone than 1997’s “Trypnotica” or 1995’s “Reliquaries.”

The group’s members (keyboardist Preston Klik, vocalist Christy Cameron Smith, vocalist/flutist Julie Schreiber, guitarist/bassist/percussionist Amy Spina and guitarist/percussionist Paul Fini) just wanted to make a CD that people could dance to.

My Scarlet Life has certainly succeeded. The group’s music is still as trippy as ever, and it still has an edge of darkness. But the vast majority of the songs on “Buzzbomb” are laced with rays of sunshine, love and hope.

Klik has also kept himself busy.

He co-wrote a track for the upcoming Sister Soleil CD (he was once a member of the group) that features Peter Gabriel on backing vocals.

My Scarlet Life will be playing at the M-Shop this Saturday night. The all-ages concert starts at 9 pm. Tickets are $4.
