YWCA invites campus to celebrate human rights

The YWCA is inviting all campus organizations to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Judy Dolphin, director of the YWCA, said the celebration is a “broad based community awareness project to get involved in the recognition of heroes and heroines for the work they’ve done and to inspire them to do more.”

She also said, “You don’t have to agree with them, but you need to recognize the real work they are doing to extend these rights.”

According to Dolphin, interested organizations will be allowed to select one of the 30 rights expressed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and feature some aspect of it.

Each group will be given a panel to display its work around the community.

These panels will not only recognize the right, but also the group. Organizations will also be asked to give a program to their group on the issue.

Dolphin said the committee is “ultimately” working toward a community-wide celebration to take place close to the initial anniversary date of Dec. 10.

Exactly what will happen at the celebration is not yet decided. Dolphin said the subcommittees are responsible for organizing the celebration.

The American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters, Amnesty International, the United Nations Association and the Ames Human Relations Commission are already involved in this project.

Dolphin said she considers the YWCA and these other organizations the “yeast team” because “we believe that the best things are done in partnership with others. We have been the yeast to get something started in Ames, and now it’s time to broaden the partnership.”

Dolphin said if a group wishes to join this team, all they have to do is send a representative to a “kick-off” organizing meeting on Monday, March 30 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Ames Public Library auditorium.

She also said another way to get involved would be to come to the YWCA located in Room 15 of Alumni Hall after the kick-off meeting to talk with her about becoming involved.
