Exploitation of tragedy
March 31, 1998
Last week in a small town in Arkansas, a tragedy took place; two young children followed through with a premeditated murder plot.
After all was said and done, four youthful, wonderful lives were ended, as well as the life of their schoolteacher.
After this tragedy took place, Carmen Cerra, cartoonist of “Poison Ink,” and the Iowa State Daily, found it justifiable to draw cartoons that would exploit this terrible event. Friday’s cartoon depicting children lying dead on a sidewalk was not only disturbing, but highly unprofessional.
If this catastrophe would have taken place in a small Iowa town, I ask you if the cartoons would have still been printed.
As editors of this newspaper, you hear many complaints. By printing cartoons such as the ones that appeared on Thursday and Friday, you might now know why.
In the future, I would hope that the Daily act not only more professionally, but also use insight and give respect when tragedies occur.
