GSB seeks to fill vacant senate seats before April
March 24, 1998
Not all senate seats for the 1998-99 school year were filled during the Government of the Student Body elections in February. And now, GSB is urging students to get involved to fill the seats.
Open seats include one College of Business, two graduate, one College of Veterinary Medicine, one international, one non-traditional, one Buchanan Hall Association, one University Student Apartment Complex and one off-campus.
The seats remain open because no one signed up to run for them during the GSB elections.
“This year there are a lot more [open seats] than I remember,” said Marcia Johnson, GSB minority senator. She said usually only a few are left unfilled.
Students can begin the process of becoming a GSB senator in two ways.
One method includes going to the council that the seat represents. A student then works with a senator already representing that council to write a seating bill for the position.
Another method includes starting at the GSB office in the East Student Office Space of the Memorial Union. The office manager helps students understand exactly what they need to do and how to write a seating bill.
Johnson said a deadline has not been set for seating bills.
The 1998-99 GSB senate will meet officially for the first time on April 22, and seating bills for open senate positions will probably be addressed that night. However, seating bills do not have to be prepared at that time.
Johnson said the only qualification for the open seats is that interested students must be in the college or residence hall they want to represent. Specialty seats, such as international senate seats, require only a student status.
Another requirement, according to the new GSB constitution, is that the student must have a minimum 2.0 grade point average.
“It is important for students to get involved,” Johnson said.
Anyone interested in the available seats should contact Johnson, Yasmine Blackburn, off-campus, Jamal White, engineering, or the GSB office at 294-1585. Individuals also may visit the GSB office in the Memorial Union.
