Iowa State took care of business in Hilton Coliseum against Fresno State on Sunday, with a dominating performance over the Bulldogs that ended 31-6.

“When you get more wins, you get more confidence,” said coach Kevin Dresser.

Redshirt sophomore Ian Parker was returning from a concussion that saw him sit out the dual against North Dakota State, but in his first bout back he was able to dominate.

Parker won by major decision 19-5 and netted four team points for the Cyclones in a bout that included two near falls and several takedowns against Fresno State’s sophomore Chris Deloza.

Parker has been gaining national attention this year, which means the Cyclones are happy to see him healthy again and picking up right where he left off.

Parker was ranked within the top 20 by InterMat (#14), FloWrestling (#18) and Trackwrestling (#12) at 141-pounds.

The 141-pound scuffle led off the dual, and the Cyclones would continue that trend of dominance throughout the day, and whether it affected how the Cyclones wrestled from there or not, it definitely set the tone for a dominating performance.

Freshman Logan Schumacher, who was wrestling in his second bout of the season, took over the starting position at 165-pounds.

“There wasn’t with me, but I guarantee there was with him,” Dresser said about Schumacher’s nerves heading into this match. “Sure, first time in Hilton Coliseum, and this place keeps getting… more exciting.”

The original starter was redshirt junior Brady Jennings who suffered an injury earlier in the season. Since then, the Cyclones have settled on Schumacher, for now.

Schumacher bounced back from his 11-0 loss by major decision against North Dakota State to secure his first dual win of his collegiate career by 11-7 decision.

He did so against redshirt freshman Brandon Martino. Martino’s dual record fell to 2-3.

The Cyclones have had an adversity-ridden season at 165-pounds, but now Schumacher might take over and prove valuable as they start facing more Big 12 opponents.

Aside from Schumacher and Parker, Iowa State had no problem securing victory over the Bulldogs, with their only losses coming at 157-pounds from redshirt junior Chase Straw and a surprising upset by junior Josh Hokit at 197-pounds over Iowa State redshirt senior Willie Miklus.

The most electrifying performance of the day came at 125-pounds from redshirt sophomore Alex Mackall. Mackall was dominating Bulldog redshirt freshman Robert Garcia IV, but Mackall wanted more. In the third period Mackall was able to pin Garcia earning six team points for the Cyclones.

Gomez followed Mackall’s performance with a technical fall win over Bulldogs’ redshirt freshman Gary Joint, and the Cyclones finished with a resounding win in their first home dual of the new year.

It was a successful day for the Iowa State wrestling team, and Gomez has been at the forefront of the team’s resurgence this year, but for now the Cyclones will get back to work.

“It’s just in the practice room,” Gomez said. “That’s where you win your matches.”
