Men’s swim team downs KU, finishes season 10-0
February 9, 1998
If you are going to cap off an undefeated season, you might as well beat a team you haven’t defeated in a decade and break a pool record for good measure.
The Iowa State men’s swimming team did just that when putting the finishing touches on an undefeated season on Saturday by beating No. 22 Kansas, 139-106.
The undefeated season (10-0) is the first ever for ISU Coach Trip Hedrick. So is his dual win over Kansas.
“It was a nice culmination of a great season,” he said.
The ISU 400 medley relay squad of Johan Andersson, Jay Schindler, Mitch McGinty and Bob Bredice got the meet started in the right direction by placing first. They broke a 15-year-old Beyer Hall record by finishing in 3:21.58.
The Cyclone relay team of Brian Rogers, Mark Ritcey, Henrik Ingesson and Jeff Gahan touched the wall second in the race, helping stake the team a 15-2 lead, a lead maintained the entire match.
The Jayhawks’ strength was in the distance events, led by World Championship performer Tyler Painter. Painter won the 1,000 and 200 freestyles to pull the Huskers within one point of ISU after three events.
But Cyclone Bob Bredice’s first place and Dusty Greenwood’s third in the 50 freestyle bulked the ISU lead back up to 10. Hedrick said that race was the turning point in the meet.
From there the Cyclones cruised, leading by as many as 35 points en route to victory.
The Cyclones all but sank the Jayhawks after sweeping the medal positions 200 butterfly, courtesy of Mitch McGinty, Lovre Franicevic and Jeremy Wilson.
The Cyclone divers also did their part to contribute to the Kansas defeat.
Diver Steve Mohabir took first place in the three-meter and third in the one-meter. Teammate Jim Zagaria took second in both diving events.
Winning the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle, Joakim Dahl netted two victories for the Cyclones. Peder Skoog championed the 200 backstroke.
Dahl was pleased with his individual performance and the job done by the entire team this season.
“It’s pretty special. It’s not every year you go undefeated,” Dahl said.
That’s true. It had been 64 years since a Cyclone squad accomplished the perfect feat.
Dahl said he expects the team to move up from its current 24th spot after going undefeated and beating two ranked teams in the process.
But he said the national attention won’t put any added pressure on the club to perform well the remainder of the season.
“I think it’s just going to do us good,” Dahl said. “We’ve been underrated for quite a while. I think we deserve to be up there.”
Hedrick said the team took the night to savor the taste of perfection, but that the swimmers will not dwell on it.
“I have no question the focus is on the Big 12 Meet,” he said.
Dahl agreed. He is excited about his individual and the team’s chances at the conference final.
“I think the team will do real good. We have great confidence,” Dahl said.
The Big 12 Championship Meet is scheduled for Feb. 26-28 in College Station, Texas.
