Lancelot and Elaine

Alicia Rice

In regards to the irate letters complaining that Lancelot and Elaine should be allowed to roam free: I agree, it’s not fair that they can’t have the run of the lake. However, the reason they are being kept fenced for the time being is that they are too brave and adventurous and are a danger to themselves. Several times last summer, they were found roaming in the middle of busy Lincoln Way, honking at cars. I’m sure many of you remember them honking and pecking at pedestrians out in front of the Memorial Union last year. The swans are young and need overseeing (they were called “rambunctious teenagers” by one university official in the alumni magazine). It is for their own safety that they are being kept penned. Once they settle down and begin to raise a family, they will be allowed to roam free once again, and we will have safe trumpeter swans on all of Lake Laverne.
