Rotary Ambassadorial scholarships

An informational meeting about the 1999-2000 Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships will be held Wednesday from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Study Abroad Center in Hamilton Hall.

Applications currently are being accepted for the scholarships, which are sponsored by Rotary International, and provide students with up to $23,000 for one academic year of study in nearly any country.

The scholarships are open to undergraduates, graduate students and college graduates.

In addition, four-year Rotary scholarships for 1999-2000 are being offered by District 6000, which includes the Ames community.

The district also will be offering one two-year scholarship totaling 22,000, and one grant of $20,000 for a university faculty member to teach in a developing country.

Calligraphy demonstration

The Calligraphic Arts Guild of Central Iowa is hosting a program on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Homesteaders West Building, 2141 Grand Ave., Des Moines.

The program will feature artist Chuck Myrick, who will present information on the art of Celtic knots.

Participants will have the opportunity to practice the technique following the demonstration. A $5 fee will be charged, and no experience is necessary.

Chemistry Seminars

The ISU chemistry department is sponsoring two speeches on Friday. Dr. Marek Pruski of the Ames Laboratory will present information about analytical chemistry at 2:30 p.m. in Room 1352m of Gilman Hall. Also, Dr. Shuquing Uy of the University of Science and Technology of China will speak about physical chemistry at 4:10 p.m. in the same location. Both events are open to everyone.
