Jones on welfare
February 2, 1998
Life is hard and filled with hard choices. The choices a person makes often have serious repercussions. On Thursday, Ben Jones wrote about the results of a decision he made and the tough situation he faces. I believe he misidentified his problem.
The public assistance structure in this country has numerous flaws. Likewise, homelessness is a tremendous problem. Mr. Jones is in a tough spot, but he put himself there, welfare didn’t.
Mr. Jones made an adult decision that resulted in a pregnancy. I believe that it is time for him to make an adult sacrifice, leave school, get a full-time job and take responsibility for his actions rather than seek our sympathy because American social programs fall short of their goals.
I understand that many people go through hard times. I also understand that people should be held accountable for their actions. All good parents must make sacrifices for their children. It is time for Mr. Jones to make his.
