An Ames resident who has garnered national recognition for the craft of quilting currently is showing her work to the public.

An exhibit created by artist Kathy Corones is on display in the Civil and Construction Engineering Conference Room of the Town Engineering Building.

Lowell Greimann, coordinating chairman for the Civil and Construction Building, and his wife Jane, are responsible for the different displays in the conference room.

Greimann said everyone has an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the quilt exhibit.

“We try to have a different display every six months. The quilts will probably be in the conference room for a couple of months or so,” he said.

Corones began showing her wall and bed quilts in 1986.

Among other locations, her work has been shown at the Iowa State Fair, Octagon Clay and Fiber and Iowa Quilters Guide Shows. She also has juried American Quilters Society shows.

In addition, photographs of her quilts have appeared on the cover of Quilting Today magazine and inside other quilting magazines.

Corones, who began making quilts in 1983, credits her talent to a neighbor who was eager to share the hobby.

She added that nature and seasonal colors inspire most of her work.

“Most of my quilts have a spring color and feeling to them,” Corones said.

She most enjoys exploring color relationships and solving her own design problems in simple patterns and star patterns, according to a press release.

Corones has six quilts displayed in the Town Engineering Building, all of which are made from cotton.

A water reflection of a maple leaf and a mariner’s compass are two examples of her work.

Corones is originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., and she earned a degree in art from Brown University of Providence, R.I., in 1966.
