ISU skaters end regular season with sharp record

Another weekend, another pair of wins for the Cyclone hockey team.
Not much can be written about the series in which Iowa State tallied 27 goals to Western Michigan’s two.
The Cyclone skaters took Friday’s match 14-1 and Saturday’s 13-1.
Coach Al Murdoch said the flu bug hit the Michigan team, and the defeats were not indicative of the quality of the opposing team.
“We were outstanding in four lines, we were just flying,” he said.
The two landslide victories closed out ISU’s regular season play with a record of 31-5 and ranked No. 1 in the nation.
On Friday, Cyclones Jason Vega and Chris Poli had hat tricks, while Tom Grimwood and Darren Anderson totaled two goals apiece. Darcy Anderson, Terry Conlin, Russ Crawford and Brian Paolello each knocked in a goal.
On Saturday, the two-point winners were Aaron Scharf, Brian Wierson, Mike Ogbourne, Mike Anderson and Bob Dressel. Single goal scorers included Vega, Grimwood and Wade Eldridge.
“It’s awesome. It makes me feel so proud of everything the guys have done and continue to do,” Murdoch said. “The support of the faculty, the fans and the townspeople has been amazing.”
It was also the last home series for Cyclone seniors Rob Howitt, Crawford, Vega and Wierson.
Looking toward the league and national tournaments, the four men shared their sentiments on their careers and teammates.
Vega said, “The team was really behind [the seniors] tonight.”
Crawford said, “It’s not about the seniors or the individuals, it’s about the team. Without the cohesiveness and love between the guys on the team, it wouldn’t be worth the effort.”
All four men expressed gratitude for the supportive fans and university community.
Looking back on the weekend, Wierson said, “We’re in good condition, but we haven’t peaked yet. We didn’t play up to our potential, but we started to gel a little more this weekend.”
And the rink is another thing the seniors said they would never forget.
“It’s home, and it’s been home for four years. I’ll always remember it,” Vega said.
Crawford, an Ames native, said he has been playing at the arena since he was five, and he will always remember the rink’s “fans and the ambiance.”
Howitt said, “It feels good to say I made it through the four years.”
Although the seniors felt somewhat saddened, the four, along with the rest of the team, know that there is some business yet unfinished — the Central States Collegiate Hockey League Tournament and the National Invitational Tournament.
The Cyclones travel next weekend to the league tournament which will be hosted by the University of Illinois. The ISU squad hosts the National Invitational Tournament at Hilton Coliseum on March 4-7.
In regard to finishing his hockey days in Ames, Vega said, “I don’t think there’s a better way to end a lengthy career.”
