Iowa State gymnasts fall short in Oklahoma meet
February 25, 1998
The Iowa State gymnasts were out-tumbled by Oklahoma on Sunday afternoon in Norman.
While the final score of 195.4 -192.3 left the Cyclones defeated, some of the women landed solid and winning performances.
Coach Amy Pyle said, “We performed a lot better than what the score read.”
Kelly Cherwien won the vault, achieving her best vault mark of the season at 9.8.
ISU’s Michelle Hladky led the Cyclones on the uneven bars, finishing fifth in the field.
Fellow tumblers Sarah Stayberg and Sarah Hodgson took sixth and seventh.
Pyle said, “The girls that hit their bar routines, those were as good of routines that they have done all year long, but we didn’t get the score.”
Floor scores were much of the same thing, Pyle said.
In that event, Angie Umbaugh led the team with a 9.725, while teammate Kelli More landed a 9.7. Kayo Merritt recorded a 9.625.
More’s beam routine balanced a score of 9.85 to win first place. Merritt tied for second with Oklahoma’s Malia Carr, each recording a 9.825.
“Kelli and Kayo just continue to do well on beam,” Pyle said. “We need to have that rub off on the other gymnasts on beam.”
Pyle said that the beam has plagued the team all year, and this weekend was no exception, as the team tallied four falls.
“Beam has been our problem all year, there’s no doubt about it,” she said.
“We’re frustrated and puzzled because they do very well in practice, but have not hit at the meet.”
Pyle said balancing the beam routines will help give the team confidence in the event and will be the key to defeating the Hawkeyes at home on Thursday.
“Iowa’s an improved team this year, so if we don’t have beam, we’re not going to win,” she said.
“It’s a big meet for us,” Pyle said. “It’s a meet we always like to win.”
The Cyclone/Hawkeye contest springs into action at 7 p.m. at Hilton.
