Today is the 12th annual celebration of national Girls and Women in Sports Day.

Reserving a day to honor female athletes began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman. Hyman was commended for her athletic accomplishments and her work toward equality in for women’s sports.

Since that date, the day has become one to reflect on history and the current sports achievements, the positive influences of athletic participation and the ongoing struggle for women athletes.

This week, Iowa State female athletes have devoted their time to speak at local elementary schools about their experiences as female athletes.
