Cyclone women run wild over Buffaloes

It was another record-setting night for the Iowa State women’s basketball team. The 58-43 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes gave the 23rd-ranked Cyclones their 20th victory of the season, joining the 1975-76 team as the only squad to accomplish that feat.

“It is a special thing, winning 20 games, but I hope that record doesn’t remained tied,” Coach Bill Fennelly said. “It’s a great accomplishment and to do it in front of our home crowd against a team who four years ago beat up on us pretty good.”

ISU shut down the Buffalo shooters. Colorado shot only 26 percent from the field in the first half and scored 18 points. The Buffaloes’ 43- point total was a season low for a Cyclone opponent.

Colorado owned a 29-6 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams, before ISU swept them this season.

“The biggest difference in this team is Stacy Frese,” said Colorado Coach Ceal Barry. “She is a great ball handler and a great shooter. She looks like a gym rat. I mean that as a compliment, she is always the first one out on the court and she has great focus. Grimm and Olson have certainly improved a great deal, but [Frese] makes them better and turns Iowa State into a top 25 team.”

Frese came up with 15 points and four assists. The four assists gave her a season total of 147, breaking a single season Cyclone record. The previous record was 144 set by Tracy Horvath in 1988-89.

Cyclone Megan Taylor also continued her hot play. Coming off a week where she earned Rookie of the Week honors, the freshman led the team with 16 points and 16 rebounds.

“They really had us on the defensive boards,” Barry said. “Megan Taylor was great. She started their transition game and that really hurt us.”

The only time the Cyclones trailed was when Colorado hit a three off of the opening tip. Then, Janel Grimm promptly regained the lead for ISU hitting three consecutive baskets.

In the second half, ISU led by as many as 21 points, at 41-20, but did not make a field goal during the last eight minutes of the game. The Cyclone squad only made three three-pointers, a season low.

Fennelly said, “Colorado defended us well tonight. It was probably a combination of us having a 20-point lead and their defense. The pace really slowed down, and I think that it kind of lulled us to sleep, which allowed them to get back into the game.”

Olson, who ended with 13 points and 11 rebounds, said, “Twenty wins is not our goal.”

“This team can do so much more and I’m ready to get there. We still have a lot to accomplish in the next month and Janel and I are ready, because there won’t be a whole lot of next games for us,” she said. “Twenty wins doesn’t automatically get you into the tournament. We still have to play well the rest of the way and into the Big 12 Tournament.”

Fennelly said, “We still have a lot of things we want to accomplish. Getting that first-round bye may be important because we do only play seven.”

ISU is now 9-2 in the Big 12 and has all but locked up one of the top four seeds in the conference tournament, which would give the team a first-round bye.
