Two members of The Movement hold protest at regents meeting

Two members of The September 29th Movement held a silent protest at last Wednesday’s Board of Regents meeting in Iowa City.

Allan Nosworthy, graduate student in English, and Simon Huss, graduate student in material science and engineering, held a 20-foot banner bearing the statement, “Free speech within the environment of public higher education is a gray area,” a quote from Carla Espinoza, assistant vice president for human resource services.

The two did not address the board but stood quietly at the back of the room from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.

They said a few people approached them and asked them questions before the meeting.

Huss said the protest was in response to The Movement being told that President Martin Jischke could not make certain decisions because he was responsible to the Board of Regents.

Nosworthy said they also carried a smaller sign, which read, “By the way, Jischke, we’re still in your office.”
