Hort Club sells flowers

As Valentine’s Day approaches this week, hopeless romantics may be frantically searching for that perfect gift to bestow on their beloved.

One possible idea has been offered by Iowa State’s Horticulture Club, which is selling various flower bulbs today and Friday for Valentine’s Day.

The Spring Bulb Sale will take place in the lobby of Beardshear Hall from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The prices, depending on the type of flower and size of the arrangement, vary from $3 to $7.

The bulbs come in various sizes and are arranged in a pot. The flowers available are daffodils, tulips, irises, hyacinth, cyclamen, primrose and snapdragons.

Jessica Riedell, chairwoman of the Spring Bulb Sale and sophomore in horticulture, said the sale has been profitable in years past. She said she is hoping for a successful sale again this year.

“There are some beautiful flowers,” Riedell said.

Riedell said the Horticulture Club forested all the bulbs, including those imported from Holland.

“[The bulbs] are a very good value, and they are produced by the Hort Club,” Riedell said. “[Purchasing the bulbs] is helping support the Hort Club.”

Riedell added the Horticulture Club has many scholarship programs, seminars and activities available for its members.

Another chairwoman of the Spring Bulb Sale, Amy Beerends, junior in horticulture, agreed that the flowers are a smart purchase.

“These are top-quality flowers because [the Horticulture Club] has grown them,” Beerends said.

Beerends said the flowers are a more creative gift idea than the average Valentine’s Day gift.

“The bulbs are considerably cheaper than roses, and they are good gifts for significant others,” she said.
