Victory over Northern Iowa gives Douglas his 300th win

With a dominating 32-3 victory over Northern Iowa, Coach Bobby Douglas earned his 300th career victory as the seventh-ranked Cyclones split a pair of duals over the weekend. Iowa State fell 32-9 Friday to Iowa. The Cyclones haven’t beaten a Hawkeye squad since 1986.

“It is certainly an accomplishment, but it is a credit to all the great wrestlers that I’ve had the honor to coach,” Douglas said. “Having those kind of wrestlers has really made me look like a good coach.”

The Hall of Fame coach has compiled a 300-128-8 career record in his 25 years as a head coach; including six at ISU, 18 seasons at Arizona State and one campaign at Cal-Santa Barbara.

Douglas led ASU to the 1988 National Championship and runner-up finishes the following two seasons and served as head coach of the 1992 Olympic wrestling squad and as an assistant in the four previous Olympic games.

ISU finished second at the NCAA in 1996 under Douglas’ tutelage. In all, Douglas’ wrestlers have earned All-America recognition 83 times and claimed a total of 69 conference titles.

“We really wanted to come back against UNI,” All-American Dwight Hinson said. “It was a reward for not only ourselves, but for Bobby. It was a monumental milestone.”

Hinson, Matt Mulvihill and Trent Hynek all recorded victories against Iowa in front of a crowd of 6,201.

Ranked No. 2 at 126, Hinson avenged an earlier home loss to sixth-ranked Doug Schwab with an 8-1 victory. Hinson was disqualified in their previous match because he could not continue due to leg cramps. It was his first victory in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in his four-year career.

“Overall it was very disappointing,” Hinson said. “There were a couple of good individual performances, but the whole team has to step up.”

“I think a lot of the younger guys wrestled scared,” he said. “Carver can really be intimidating and the freshmen have to learn from their mistakes.”

Mulvihill upset No. 17 Paul Jenn. The senior from Des Moines jumped out to a 7-1 after getting three takedowns and a two-point near fall in the first two periods.

Jenn came back to score 10 points in the final stanza, but Mulvihill was able to hold on for the 12-11 victory.

At heavyweight, Hynek earned his second one-point victory over Iowa’s Wes Hand. Hand scored first in the match with a second period escape, but Hynek rebounded to gain a 3-1 lead by the end of the period.

Hynek’s escape with just :47 remaining sealed the 5-4 triumph.

ISU was missing 150-pounder David Maldonado and Zach Thompson at 190 pounds for both weekend duals.

Maldonado spent a night in the hospital due to illness, while Thompson was suffering from an injured hamstring.

Against UNI, No. 7 Cody Sanderson and Hinson each earned overtime victories over ranked wrestlers. Sanderson nipped Eric Keller, while Hinson downed Nick Flach.

Sanderson is now 23-7, while Hinson stands at 24-3.

ISU’s Andy Wollner earned a forfeit at 126.

Cole Sanderson, Perry Parks, Matt Patitz, Ben Perkins, Mulvihill and Hynek ran off six straight decisions after Frank Kisley fell at 142 pounds.

Douglas was pleased by the results of the UNI meet.

“It was probably the best we have wrestled all season,” he said. “We were really outstanding at 118 and 126 (against Iowa) and then at 118 and 134 (against UNI). We wanted to challenge them a little bit by moving them up a weight class, and they responded really well.”

The Cyclones are now 12-8 going into the Big 12 Championships Saturday, March 7, in Norman, Oklahoma.

“We really have to pick it up,” Hinson said. “Optimistically we could qualify five or six guys for nationals, but we have to win our matches and wrestle hard in practice all this week.”

Douglas echoed Hinson’s thoughts.

“We’ve been training for the conference and national meets all year, but it has been tough with our lack of experience,” Douglas said. “We are starting to peak now, but we still have to continue to improve. If we could have anything above six qualifiers it would be outstanding.”
