ISU wrestlers win one, lose two at National Duals

The Iowa State wrestling team traveled to Iowa City last weekend with high hopes for the National Duals, but were eliminated earlier than anticipated. The sixth-ranked Cyclones came out of the weekend with a 1-2 dual record, with a victory over Augsburg College and losses to Penn State and Oklahoma.
Minnesota won the meet with an 18-17 victory over Iowa in the finals. Iowa’s heavyweight, Wes Hand, was pinned to allow the Gopher victory.
Dwight Hinson (126) and Zach Thompson (190) went 3-0 on the weekend. Hinson is now16-2, while Thompson is18-5.
Against Augsburg, the Division III defending champion, third-ranked Cody Sanderson and second-ranked Hinson got the Cyclones off on a good foot by recording major decisions over Henry Gerten and Brian Jones. Sanderson’s win moved him to 17-2 on the season.
Frank Kisley, Cole Sanderson and David Maldonado all earned decisions to push the ISU lead to 17-0 before Ben Schwab fell to Jesse Bakalyar.
Schwab’s defeat by major decision gave Augsburg their first points of the match. It was Kisley’s first victory of the season, while Maldonado boosted his record to 13-5.
Ben Perkins, Brad Horton and Thompson came back to tally three straight victories, all by decision, to put ISU ahead 27-4. Perkins upped his record to 6-3, while Horton was 12-5.
ISU’s Brody Kellogg lost at heavyweight, and the meet concluded with a score of 27-7.
In the second round, the Cyclones ran into No. 3 Penn State, losing 20-14.
To start the match, ISU’s Cody Sanderson lost to No. 7 Jeremy Hunter at 118. But Hinson came back with a major decision to give ISU its first and only lead at 4-3.
The Cyclones dropped their next four matches with Kisley, Cole Sanderson, Maldonado and Perry Parks all dropping decisions which gave Penn State a commanding 17-4 lead.
ISU’s Matt Patitz narrowed the margin 17-8 with an upset by major decision over the nation’s sixth-ranked Glenn Pritzlaff.
After Matt Mulvihill (177) was nipped 7-6, Thompson and heavyweight Trent Hynek scored victories. ISU took defeat by a score of 20-14.
In the consolation round, ISU fell victim to Oklahoma.
The older Sanderson, Cody, was beaten 16-4 by Shane Valdez. Hinson then came back with an 8-3 win over Sooner Dane Valdez.
Michael Lightner knocked off Kisley at 134, but Cole Sanderson rebounded for the Clones with a 6-1 victory over Bo Eubanks.
After Maldonado won by forfeit, Oklahoma won three straight matches over Parks, Perkins and Horton to gain a 14-12 advantage.
At 190, Thompson once again came through with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Orville Parker — giving ISU a 15-14 lead going into the final match.
At heavyweight, Hynek was pinned by Henry Ward. The pin gave Oklahoma the 20-15 victory and eliminated ISU.
The Cyclones go on the road to Oklahoma for meets on Jan. 23 and 24. The ISU squad is scheduled to grapple Oklahoma State as well as another go around with Oklahoma.
