Drug bust in Helser

A day off on Monday apparently left one Iowa State student with too much time on his hands.

Justin Jorgensen, freshman in art and design, and Benjamin Girard, 19, of Sioux City, were both taken into custody after allegedly smoking marijuana in Jorgensen’s dorm room, 4787 Helser Hall.

At 4:17 p.m., the Department of Public Safety received a report of an odor coming from the room, said Loras Jaeger, director of DPS.

Officers entered the room and “established that marijuana had been smoked in the room,” Jaeger said. “Marijuana and paraphernalia with residue were present in the room.”

Jorgensen and Girard were charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Jaeger said possession of a controlled substance is a serious misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to six months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

Because the incident occurred in a residence hall, Jorgensen could face a “period of probation or removal from the residence halls,” said Wade Burken, South Helser hall director.

Burken said the residence hall process will be separate from possible charges brought under Iowa law.

The case will be heard by the All-Residence Judiciary. The date of the hearing has not yet been decided.
