ISU wrestlers saddled on trip to Oklahoma
January 26, 1998
It didn’t get any easier for the Iowa State wrestling team as the squad traveled to Oklahoma Friday night to face the Sooners and then took on Oklahoma State the next night.
The Cyclones dropped both duals to drop to 6-7 overall. All seven losses have come at the hands of the top six teams in the nation.
ISU was looking to avenge a loss to Oklahoma which eliminated them from the National Dual Meet just a week earlier. But the sixth-ranked Sooners won six of the first eight matches to prevail 22-14.
It was a battle of ranked wrestlers at 118 with the Sooner’s sixth-ranked Shane Valdez edging eighth-rated Cyclone Cody Sanderson 4-2.
No. 2 Dwight Hinson bounced right back for ISU gaining a decision over Dane Valdez 5-4.
After two consecutive losses by Frank Kisley and Cole Sanderson, David Maldonado came up with a technical fall over Bo Eubanks, 22-5, at 150 pounds.
With ISU trailing 10-8, Oklahoma’s second-rated Byron Tucker pinned Perry Parks at the 2:55 mark of their 158-pound match. After two more consecutive losses by Ben Perkins and Matt Patitz, the Sooners had a commanding 22-8 advantage to put the meet away.
However, ISU was able to come up with a couple of big victories at 190 and heavyweight. Zach Thompson gained a 4-2 victory over Orville Palmer, while Trent Hynek earned a 7-6 decision against John Henry Ward.
Hynek got some revenge over Ward, because it was his loss that decided the team’s match at the National Duals.
Second-ranked Hinson’s victory over top-ranked Eric Guerrero was the highlight in ISU’s 26-6 loss to No. 1 Oklahoma State.
Hinson won 3-1 in overtime for his second victory over Guerrero this season and the sixth win in seven career matches.
It ran Hinson’s record on the season to 18-2.
ISU’s only other victory came in 190 pounds, when freshman Zach Thompson, ranked eleventh nationally, defeated Pat Popolizo of OSU 3-2 to improve his record to 19-5.
Eight-rated Sanderson fell 4-0 to fourth-rated Teague Moore at 118, while Kisley was beaten 8-3 at 134.
Cowboys Steven Schmidt, No. 2 at 142 pounds and Hardell Moore, No. 1 at 158, each recorded major decisions over Cole Sanderson and Parks.
Maldonado, Perkins and Matt Mulvihill all lost by decision. Hynek lost to Ben Lee in overtime at heavyweight.
Oklahoma State ran its record to a perfect 7-0.
The Cyclones will host No. 1 Nebraska Sunday at Hilton.
