Ice arena debate
January 20, 1998
In regard to the story about the ice arena, I do admit that it is not the best ice arena in the conference, but many of the statements were very wrong.
But, left out was the fact that the ice is still flat and in excellent condition almost every day. It is true that under the ice the ground is rising because of the permafrost, but the workers there do an excellent job of keeping it under control.
On one visit, I saw the ISU hockey players unintentionally chipping up some of the paint under the ice. This does not correlate with what assistant coach Ward had said. He stated that the Zamboni was just adding more and more water all of the time. If that were true, the ice would be 10 feet thick by now, which it isn’t.
It is also true that Ames needs a new ice arena, but let’s also remember the great supervisors like Lee, Fred, Matt, Kevin and Chris that keep the arena running for 20 hours of the day. They are full-time students who have the major task of keeping the arena going everyday from 5 a.m. until 1 a.m.
Maybe some thought should have been put into acknowledging the people that do keep the ice available to Ames and ISU.
