Banned book author to talk about love at Memorial Union
January 29, 1998
Leslea Newman, an activist, poet and author who has used education to combat homophobia, will present a lecture tonight in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union.
After her lecture at 8 p.m., a reception will be held at the Margaret Sloss Women’s Center.
The reception will include a presentation of the photo exhibit “Love Makes a Family: Living in Lesbian and Gay Families.”
Her books include “Writing from the Heart: Inspiration and Exercises for Women who Want to Write,” “A Letter to Harvey Milk,” “Still Life with Buddy” and the ground-breaking children’s book, “Heather Has Two Mommies.”
According to a press release, Newman wrote “Two Mommies” to show young children that “the most important thing about a family is that all the people in it love each other.”
The controversial “Two Mommies” has become the second-most banned book in the United States.
Her presentation is expected to discuss the subjects of homophobia, censorship and family values. She will also read excerpts from her work and present a short video.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
