Your new opinion pages
January 12, 1998
Welcome to the the new and improved Daily opinion pages!
As we hope you’ve noticed, the pages have been redesigned with a whole new layout. We decided we wanted a new look for the Daily, and this is what we came up with.
Besides looking pretty cool (in our opinion), we wanted this new layout to serve a couple different purposes.
First of all, we hope the layout allows for easier and more interesting reading, with more artwork, including cartoons by our staff cartoonist Carmen Cerra.
However, the most important new feature of the improved layout is more opportunity for reader input.
That’s right. We want you to contribute even more to the Daily.
On the left side of the first opinion page, there are two sections with which we need your help.
The first section is the photo survey. You’ve seen it before, and many of you have already had your picture gracing our pages.
The photo surveys will now be much more frequent in the opinion pages, so if you’re approached by a Daily photographer, don’t hesitate to give him or her your mug shot.
The other new section on the side of the page is called Quick Es. These one-line comments can be about any subject you choose.
Simply email your blurb to [email protected] with QuickE as the subject. Include your year and your major. All responses are anonymous.
So that’s all of the new stuff. But there’s another familiar aspect of the Daily which we want you to be more involved in.
Letters to the editor are an important part of the opinion page. They allow for an honest exchange of ideas about hot topics on campus.
If you have an opinion you want to express, write us a letter. We may not print everything we receive, but there’s a good chance your letter will make it to press.
However, we won’t accept letters that are unnecessarily offensive or libelous. Don’t even bother writing those.
Also, keep in mind that we will edit your letters. Grammar will be corrected and sections may be left out for space reasons.
So, with all that in mind, enjoy the new version of the Daily.
We’ll keep working hard to keep up with the opinions of Iowa State.
