Sincere Safe Zones
January 20, 1998
Friday, Jan 16, I read “Senators fight executive order for Safe Zone in GSB offices” in the ISU Daily. Although, I am gay … I agree.
The article states that GSB President Rob Wiese and Vice President Matt McLaren signed an order declaring “…the GSB office space and all meeting places of GSB as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) ‘Safe Zones.'” Thank you, for your efforts and supportive act.
Senators such as Chris Wisher, TRA, oppose this. “…the LGBT Safe Zone would prohibit free debate among the senators in the GSB office … the LGBT Safe Zone order borders on censorship.”
I do NOT support this view. However, I want no stickers to be placed where the people of that setting don’t support the Safe Zone project.
I do NOT want the project to become a political tool, a fad or trivialized in ANY way. I support the project completely and want the project stickers to be displayed with pride and sincerity.
There are many students and faculty who are intimidated by people’s hateful views. I don’t want any of these students to question, “Can I really talk to this person, or is that sticker there because it MUST BE??”
Before today, I would feel uplifted when I saw a Safe Zone sticker. I always try to thank the person for showing the hospitality and courage to display one. Now that has been lost to me. I want it back. I want to know that these people are sincere and not smiling at me with daggers in their eyes.
My sentiment is graciously extended to President Jischke’s office too. If you don’t support it … take it down. You’re not fooling anyone.
