The Iowa State women’s basketball team has reasons to be proud of its Thanksgiving break. Not only were they able to spend it in Honolulu, but the team also won the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic.

In the process, ISU defeated a national power in 10th-ranked Alabama.

In the finals, the Cyclones knocked off host school Hawaii, 64-62. Reserve guard Amanda Bartz led the way with five three-pointers and ended with 17 points and five rebounds.

Stacy Frese and Jayme Olson both scored 15 points and grabbed seven boards. Frese scored 10 of the team’s final 14 points.

ISU led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter before the Rainbows came back. Hawaii took a 53-50 lead with 6:20 to play, but ISU was able to make some clutch baskets and free throws to preserve the victory.

To advance to the tourney finals, the Cyclones defeated Idaho in the first round with a score of 77-64. ISU led by 15 at half and cruised to the 13-point victory.

Janel Grimm topped the Cyclones with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Olson added 16 against Idaho. Also scoring in double figures were Frese with 13 and freshman Megan Taylor with 11. Taylor narrowly missed a double-double by hauling in nine rebounds.

The Cyclones came back in their second-round win over the ranked Crimson Tide. The team rallied from a three-point deficit at the end of the third quarter.

In the Cyclones’ 61-58 downing of the Crimson Tide, Olson poured in 22 points. Frese and Taylor followed with 15 and 12 points, respectively. All of Frese’s points came via the three-point shot, as she was 5 of 9 from downtown.

The Cyclones only shot 38 percent for the game, but Alabama managed only 37 percent shooting. ISU also dominated the glass by snagging 39 rebounds — nine more than the opposition.

For the three-game tourney, Olson totaled 53 points. Frese led the way on the perimeter, hitting for 43.

The only down note for the Cyclones occurred on North American soil, as the team lost to Northern Arizona in Flagstaff last Monday. After the Thanksgiving break, the Cyclones’ record sits at 5-1 overall.

The women return home to face the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Thursday at 7 p.m.
