A look at Lightfoot

On Nov. 15, I attended the Greene County Republican Dinner in Jefferson.

I was disappointed and dismayed by the comments Jim Ross Lightfoot made about students at Iowa’s public universities who study “anthropology and fields like that” and expect to find work in Iowa after graduation.

Mr. Lightfoot seems to imply that the three regents universities are assembly lines producing an endless string of unemployable graduates.

It is unfortunate Mr. Lightfoot, as a candidate for governor, has not better acquainted himself with the facts or discovered the three regents universities are often ranked nationally for excellence in many areas.

For those of us involved in the regents community — students, alumni, faculty, staff —ÿI would suggest Mr. Lightfoot’s comments raise serious questions about his qualifications to be governor with its extensive budget and appointment powers over higher education in Iowa.

At a minimum, Mr. Lightfoot should name the other “fields” like anthropology that students should avoid.

Lt. Governor Joy Corning is looking better all the time.
