The Christmas Closet: seven years of helping

The Story County Christmas Closet is on its seventh year of helping the needy in Story County.

Families in Story County that meet the 150 percent poverty guidelines, and elderly or disabled people who will be spending the holidays alone can apply for donations.

Through the Christmas Closet, children receive items such as new toys, gifts and clothing. In addition, families are provided with a new blanket and a gift certificate to buy groceries, and nonperishable food items, new clothing and gifts are delivered to the elderly and disabled.

“Our goal is to help everyone that needs assistance in Story County,” said Charene Starcevic, executive director of the Christmas Closet. Last year, 1,284 people were helped through the Christmas Closet, she said.

The Christmas Closet was started in 1990 by Starcevic and United Way and has served people from every town in Story County.

“I wanted to make sure every child in Story County had a new gift under the tree,” Starcevic said.

Every gift given is new and is collected and distributed by volunteers of all ages.

“We would encourage people to get involved through donations, volunteering or both,” Starcevic said.

People can donate at North Grand Mall, or they can bring items into the office. Those who are unable to drop of donations can call the office and have them picked up.

Family distribution of the gifts will be Thursday, Dec. 18, and Friday Dec. 19. Bags for the elderly and disabled will be delivered the week of Dec. 15. For more information on the Christmas Closet, call the Volunteer Center at (515) 232-2736.
