Seasonal flowers right for the pickin’

Red and green are the colors of the season, and as a reminder of that, there are 900 poinsettias in full bloom being sold by the Horticulture Club.

But the club is not selling only red poinsettias — they also have white and “monet,” which have pink and white marbled leaves, available for sale.

“Don’t wait until the last minute,” said Brian Krug, junior in horticulture. “They go really fast.”

A poinsettia in a 4-inch pot costs $5, one in a 6-inch pot is $7, and the price for one in an 8-inch pot is $12. The sale will take place Dec. 3-5 in the lower level of Beardshear Hall and in the food court area of the Memorial Union.

“This is the sale that goes the fastest. [We are] one of the busiest clubs on campus with all the activities we do,” said James Romer, senior in horticulture.

Krug said poinsettias are rather durable plants and have a “normal shelf life of three to four weeks.” Romer added that he had one of the plants live until almost Easter.

The Horticulture Club sells poinsettias annually, said Krug.

After the club orders cuttings in the spring, the plants are grown and cared for until they are ready to be sold in December.

Proceeds from the sale are used to support club trips, conferences, scholarships, community service projects and public relations, as well as buying more cuttings for next year’s sale, Krug said.

“The main reason is not just for the money but the experience,” he said. “It gives the club practical experience for what we learn in class.”

Krug said they try to get as many people involved in preparing for and running the sale as possible.

Co-chairs for this year’s sale include Krug; Danielle Johnson, senior in horticulture; Jessica Betts, junior in horticulture and Sarah Gross, junior in horticulture.

Krug added that the Horticulture Club is open to all interested students. “We try to have as much fun as we can,” he said.
