A semi-positive message
December 5, 1997
The world was thrilled earlier this month to see the McCaughey septuplets delivered into the world without any complications.
Some, including a few doctors, hailed it as a miracle of modern science.
Now the family is being overwhelmed with donations of everything from a 15-passenger van to a lifetime supply of Pampers and a year’s worth of free groceries.
In fact, if enough funds are raised by local builders, the Carlisle family could also receive a new house.
Even the state of Iowa is basking in the limelight from being the host of such a miraculous event.
It’s good to see the generosity of the people in Iowa and around the country in times like this.
However, millions of babies are born every year, many of whom are born into less fortunate families who have difficulty supporting even one child.
Couldn’t people and businesses donate some of their money and products to these less fortunate families as well?
In addition, we cannot forget the families who choose to have seven or more children and still struggle to make ends meet.
We can safely say it was the McCaughey’s choice to have seven children — the couple was warned about important health risks prior to the births of the babies.
The fact that seven babies were born to one mother is inspiring, but we also should remember there are many other mothers and fathers out there with just one child who are struggling.
We also need to remember all of the mothers who have successfully given birth to twins, triplets, quadruplets and quintuplets, and who also may be struggling with finances. In fact, a timely holiday donation could give those people the help they need.
