School spirit

Troy Lenz

Referring to the article on Oct. 29, “Looking back at stupidity,” written by Robert Collins, I find it strange that an Iowa State alumnus thinks tearing down goalposts puts a major financial burden on ISU.

It’s appalling that this alum would reconsider giving money to the university for this reason.

I didn’t hear anyone else bitch when we won the Big Eight Tournament in basketball and cut the nets down. I realize it’s not the same cost, but it’s the same principle.

This is our trophy! The Big Twelve does not give out a trophy for beating Baylor, but ISU deserves it. This was not destruction, this was school spirit. I remember three or four years ago when there were not enough students in the stands to tear down a goalpost. We are supporting the football program at a time when few others are. You and the university should be happy about that, Robert.

There are a lot of positive programs that do need your support on campus. Renovations to the Four Seasons Fountain and scholarships are major areas where the university needs alumni funding.

The athletic program is only one aspect of this school. Don’t discount your support to the university because of one personal disappointment.
