A little support

Daniel M. Beaver-Seitz

Maybe gay teens are at a higher risk of suicide because people write letters to the editor saying that their “lifestyle” is wrong. Maybe it’s because if they are honest with their parents, they stand a chance of being kicked out of the house. Maybe it’s because their religious leaders tell them that they are going to hell.

Maybe if more people wrote letters like Charles Godwin’s Nov. 11 letter, the suicide rate would go down a little. Maybe if parents supported their children unconditionally, as mine did, it would go down.

Maybe if more churches supported people like mine does, it would go down. Maybe if their was more support, fewer people would die. So yes, Ms. Cherrington, there are a lot of maybes, certainly many more than you acknowledge.
