Leaf Disposal Day

In response to the unusual weather and requests from citizens, the City of Ames is adding one more day for free leaf disposal at the Ames Yard Waste Site. There is one free leaf disposal day left: Nov. 15. Hours for free disposal are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The yard waste site is located at 2101 Watt St.


Love Poems Sought

Students interested in writing love poems can win up to $1000 by entering a free poetry contest sponsored by Hollywood’s Famous Poets Society.

The contest is open to everyone, and 28 prizes will be awarded.

Those interested should send one love poem of any style, 21 lines or less, to:

The deadline for entries is Dec. 8, and a winners’ list will be mailed to all those who entered.

The Society reserves the right to publish all winning poems.


Racquetball Tournament

The ISU Racquetball Club Fall Tournament will take place Saturday, Nov. 17 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Lied Recreation Center.

The tournament is open to everyone, and the entry deadline is Friday, Nov. 7. There is a $15 entry fee.

Door prizes will be given away from The Racquet and Fitness Corner, Subway, Sukothai and Willie Williams Sports.

Family Fun Day

A Family Fun Day at the Municipal Indoor Pool is being sponsored by Ames Parks and Recreation Department this Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Games and activities will be scheduled for all ages from 2 to 4 p.m.

The general pool admission will be the only fee for the afternoon activities.

Holiday Craft Fair

Ames Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a Holiday Craft Fair this Saturday at the Community Center Gymnasium (5th and Clark) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be 73 exhibitors displaying a wide variety of crafts, and door prizes will be given away every half hour.

Admission costs $1, and those under age 15 are admitted free.

Technical Communicators

The Des Moines chapter of the Society for Technical Communication will meet to discuss making information accessible for people with disabilities at the Memorial Union Cardinal Room Nov. 18.

Featured speakers will be Shan Sasser, technical writer at the Iowa Department of the Blind, and Karen Keninger, a rehabilitation consultant.

Sasser will provide a set of universal standards to make information accessible for people with disabilities, as well as demonstrate how a blind person accesses information via computer.

The presentation should be especially helpful to those who design and develop Web sites, online manuals and software.

Social time will begin at 5 p.m., followed by a business meeting at 5:30, dinner at 6 and the program at 7.

Cost for dinner and the program will be $13.
