Protect yourself
November 4, 1997
With the recent fire in Larch Hall, coupled by memory of last year’s fire that leveled Theta Chi, Iowa State students should seriously consider investing in renters’ insurance.
Without the safety of mom and dad’s insurance, many students must face up to reality.
Our possessions, which might not seem that valuable, really do amount to some high-dollar values.
Renters’ insurance will protect items such as your television, stereo, appliances, furniture and more.
It can ensure students who live in the residence halls, in fraternities and sororities and in apartments and houses that their belongings will be replaced if tragedy should strike.
Surely, fires are unexpected —ÿall the more reason to protect yourself.
If you are living in a residence hall, you must depend on hundreds of other students to act responsibly to prevent tragedy.
This thought really isn’t all that reassuring.
If you live in a greek house or apartment, you must depend on the people who live in your housing structure to do the same.
Not only should students be responsible in purchasing renters’ insurance, but landlords, the residence department and greek house chapters should encourage students to do so.
Educating students of risks and perks will help them make informed decisions.
Besides, most of us can’t afford to replace damaged electronics and furniture.
Added costs aren’t easily budgeted into a student’s money supply or lack thereof.
So, be smart. Protect yourself and your belongings. Find out about renters’ insurance and invest in your belongings.
You never know when something disastrous will happen.
