Holiday night offers fun, chance at Bulls tickets

For adults who feel like getting into the holiday spirit early and spending an evening away from the kids, “Live at the Fantasy” is offering an evening of trees, lights and music.

“Live at the Fantasy,” which is part of the “Fantasy of Trees and Lights” celebration, will be held at the Great Hall of the Memorial Union on Saturday, Nov. 22. The event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to midnight, and the cost is $45 per person, with a $19 tax deductible.

Reservations for “Live” must be made by Nov. 15.

“Our purpose is to have a festive event that has dinner, dancing and entertainment,” said Diane Blackwelder, co-chair of “Fantasy of Trees and Lights.”

“It’s going to be a very memorable evening,” she said.

“Live” is being sponsored by the foundation, auxiliary and hospital of Mary Greeley Medical Center.

Barb Gohman, president of Mary Greeley Auxiliary, said the evening will begin with a walk previewing festively decorated Christmas trees.

“Live” will feature about 50 trees, Gohman said.

She said the majority of the trees are decorated by members of the Ames community, although several trees are sponsored by local businesses.

Gohman said some of the most popular themes of the trees in the past have been various collections, such as teddy bears, angels and baskets.

She said one of the more interesting themes last year was a tree decorated with seashells the decorator had collected on trips to Florida.

After a walk through the trees, the evening will continue with a four-course meal catered by the Memorial Union staff.

The music of the evening will be provided by the Ames Jazz Quartet and by the Midwestern band The Rumbles.

Blackwelder said The Rumbles will play a variety of different music from pop to rock to slow-dancing.

“They are a very popular group that has been around for a long time,” Blackwelder said.

Also, there will be a “fantasy lockbox” contest at “Live.”

Any attendant who pays $10 to enter the contest will receive a key, and at the end of the evening entrants will line up on stage and try to unlock the box.

Only one key will be able to unlock the “fantasy lockbox.”

The fantasy lockbox will contain an autographed Chicago Bulls basketball signed by last year’s team, two tickets to a Chicago Bulls game of the winner’s choice, a weekend getaway package to Chicago donated by Sail Aweigh Travel and a golf bag from Golf USA.

Gohman said there has already been a tremendous amount of interest in “Live.”

Some tickets are still available, however.

Blackwelder said she expects about 400 people to attend.

The $19 tax deductible comes from the portion of the “Live” sales that will be donated to the Israel Family Hospice House, which is being built in Ames.

According to a recent press release, the Israel Family Hospice House “will provide an important option for terminally ill individuals to live their remaining life in a peaceful setting with the support of familiar comforts and family.”

Mary and Warren Israel of Ames have donated a $500,000 gift to the Mary Greeley Medical Center Hospice House.

The 12-bed house will be managed by Cheryl MacVey of HOMEWARD, Mary Greeley’s home health-care outreach arm. The house should be completed in the Fall of 1998.

“Fantasy of Trees and Lights” is from Wednesday, Nov. 19, through Sunday, Nov. 23.
