Iowa State crowns multiple champions at season-opening wrestling tournament

The Iowa State wrestling team opened its season in impressive fashion by claiming six individual champions, four co-champions and two runners-up at the annual Harold Nichols’ Cyclone Open Sunday at Hilton Coliseum.

Cyclone individual champions included freshman Jesse West at 118 pounds, sophomore Cody Sanderson at 126 pounds, 158-pound freshman Joe Heskett, 177-pound junior Brad Horton, freshman Zach Thompson at 190 pounds and junior heavyweight Trent Hynek.

Dwight Hinson and Luis Blanco reached the finals of their weight class and were ruled co-champions at 134 pounds. Matt Patitz and Cael Sanderson shared the first-place honors at 167.

Finishing in second place were Ben Shane at 142 pounds and David Maldonado at 150. Brody Kellogg and Perry Parks also reached the championship round.

This season Hinson is attempting to become only the eighth Cyclone to earn four-time All-American honors. Hinson was named outstanding wrestler of the tournament.

Heskett recorded three pins on the day, including one in 26 seconds.

Attendance for the opening home meet was listed at 832.

ISU next travels to Boston University on Nov. 22 to participate in the Boston Duals. The next home match is Dec. 14 against Iowa.
