Consistency needed

Lara Olson

A very close friend of mine recently came out onto a football field, was tackled, pounded and humiliated by at least five officers in front of thousands of people. He now faces some serious charges. He, by the way, has never been an ISU student, yet still a loyal fan.

How ironic. I’m a bit confused about the policies (or lack thereof) in place regarding the expected conduct of spectators at Jack Trice Stadium. I’ve been down on the field many times and haven’t been arrested. We all now know what happens when they decide that it’s not okay.

I have a solution that even the “powers that be” can live with. Provide for accountability. Have some lawyer draft a waiver for every taxpaying citizen gracing the gates of Jack Trice Stadium to sign stating, “… if you come out onto the field, etc., etc., etc., you will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

Eliminate the confusion by clearly defining what is and is not allowed. Help us to understand, so unnecessary arrests, charges and an overall spoiled day can be avoided for future football games.

If goal posts are such a hot commodity, perhaps it would be best to surround them, instead of cornering a small portion of the stadium in an attempt to prevent some people from coming out onto the field while the rest of the area is fair game.

All I ask for is consistency and clear boundaries, which will probably never happen, because then the officers would need to be held accountable for their actions, too.
