You could call him Iowa State’s Louis Armstrong, but he answers to Bovinette — James Bovinette.
The ISU music professor and renowned jazz trumpeter will strut his stuff tonight at the Music Hall Recital Hall in a concert starting at 7:30 p.m.
The concert, which has no admission charge, will be broken into two segments.
The first half will features ISU Jazz Combo members Scott Spick, Jeremy Pfeffer, Brian Nichols and Eric Allen, who also make up Jazz Triangle, a well-known group in Ames.
After intermission, the ISU Jazz Ensembles will take the stage with their mix of blues, funk, Latin and swing.
“The jazz ensembles are comprised completely of ISU students,” Bovinette said, “and the music played at the concert will be completely improvisional.”
Rick Haydon, who plays the 7-string Bennedetto guitar, will appear as a guest soloist.
Haydon, who is an accomplished musician, manages a recording studio and is also an associate professor of music at Southern Illinois University. He has been a professional musician for 35 years, with 20 of those years spent in the jazz area.
“Haydon’s 7-string Bennedetto adds a uniqueness to his already exceptional guitar talents,” Bovinette said.
