Catt letter correction
November 10, 1997
I would like to make a correction to a slight, although possibly misleading, error in my opinion letter from Nov. 7.
The error is found in my argument that Catt was a political expedient. It is printed in the Daily as, “… it is difficult to prove or disprove her personal feelings as opposed to her public statement …” where it should say, “… as opposed to her public statements …” as one would find several racist, classist and xenophobic comments in the infamous Chapter six alone.
I believe this distinction is important, as in reading Catt’s works, there is a clear pattern of such statements, rather than just one comment as is contended by the administration.
This series of comments has been continuously documented by scholars and researchers of the women’s suffrage movement and should not be reduced to mislead people to believe that her racist, classist and xenophobic comments were confined to merely one instance. I sincerely regret this error.
