Cutthroat Disney
November 18, 1997
In the Nov. 14 Daily, Mike Milik wrote a praising review of “The Little Mermaid.” However, if you are considering seeing this film and experiencing the “magic of Disney,” you should remember Disney isn’t just a magical, creative company, it’s also a magical, cutthroat, capitalistic empire.
Consider the release of “The Little Mermaid” — conspicuously close to “Anastasia,” don’t you think?
In fact, “The Little Mermaid”‘s re-release is nothing more than an attempt to completely squash “Anastasia,” the first high-profile animation movie in the past few years to come from any company except Disney.
Disney chose to release it as a “special 17-day engagement” — thus making sure if anyone is going to take their kids to a movie in this month, it will be theirs. This wonderfully engineered move is a simple plot to destroy “Anastasia”‘s initial revenues.
I love Disney movies as much as the next person, and I really liked “The Little Mermaid” the first time I saw it.
But, before you decide which movie to see this coming weekend, remember that by seeing “The Little Mermaid” you are supporting a company whose current goal is to simply squash competitors and make money, not to enchant the audience as they would have you believe.
