Husker fan defends team

Michael Mischnick

I am writing in response to Chad Calek’s latest Nebraska-bashing column. Mr. Calek, I do not care if you hate Nebraska; in fact, I prefer that someone of your ignorance not be a Husker fan. I do, however, have a problem with you insulting the integrity of its program.

For 25 years, Nebraska has had one of the cleanest college football programs in the nation. They have had more Academic All-Americans than any other school in that time.

Yes, for one year they had numerous incidents, and I condone absolutely none of them. However, every player was punished for their actions, by either suspension or expulsion from the team. But that was two years ago.

I found it ironic that sportscasters of last year’s Orange Bowl were making a big deal of Nebraska’s five or six incidents in the previous seasons, while their opponent, Virginia Tech, had had over 30 in the current season.

As for your praise of the Cyclones, Mr. Calek, Iowa State is far from a model program. At least Nebraska players go to class. I have picked up the Daily at least once this year and read about Cyclones who haven’t. I also haven’t seen Nebraska players making national headlines for breaking into a residence hall and stealing other students’ possessions.

You also asked Husker fans why we enrolled in ISU over Nebraska. All I can say is, a great football team does not make a school that choice.

I do not pretend that Nebraska has a better school than Iowa State, especially in my major. I did not pick my college for football, just like I do not change the teams I cheer for because I where I attend school.

I can understand if you dislike, or even hate, Nebraska. There are many programs in the nation which I feel the same way toward.

But don’t continue to use something that happened two years ago, and has been rectified since, against them.

It just makes you look like a hypocrite.
