Helping others
October 14, 1997
With the leaves beginning to fall, the weather is taking a turn for the cold. That means it’s about time to pull out the sweaters and coats, turn on the heat, cuddle under the blankets, drink hot cocoa and turn the defrost on in your car.
But there are people who don’t have these luxuries, or many other privileges that come with having a home — whether it be a greek house, a residence hall, an apartment or a house.
Many of us don’t realize not everyone has a roof for shelter or a bed in which to sleep.
That is why an Iowa State fraternity is trying to raise awareness about the homeless by going homeless for 24 hours.
Phi Beta Sigma is beginning a 24-hour sleep-out near the campanile today. Members will collect donations, canned food and clothing for homeless shelters in Ames.
As fraternity advisor Miles Davis said, homelessness in Ames doesn’t really seem like a problem. However, the fact that it isn’t as visible here as in large cities doesn’t mean it isn’t a problem.
Homelessness in our town exists. And people need your help.
Phi Beta Sigma is to be commended for recognizing the importance and magnitude of this issue that plagues society.
Although most homeless people in Ames aren’t easily sighted, it is good to make people aware that the problem plagues not only our nation, but also our city.
While you are walking across campus today thinking of how cold you are as the first hints of a bitter Iowa wind hits you, remember you have things other people don’t have.
You may think that because you are a not-so-rich college student, you don’t have much to give up. But you do.
Help the members of Phi Beta Sigma help Ames’ homeless.
