Snowstorm cuts tennis play short

The Cyclone women’s tennis team tallied some wins in singles and doubles play in the incomplete Drake University Lloyd Stokstad Fall Tennis Classic. The Sunday matches were cancelled due to the power outage caused by the storm.

ISU’s Allison Arvizu and Maggi Agustsson each picked up wins in the singles competition.

In doubles play, Arvizu and Simons paired up to score a victory over a Missouri couplet and ISU’s Mollie Racette and Kirsten Fagen combined their skills to defeat Illinois State.

“Everybody played really well this weekend. I felt good about our team as a group,” Arvizu said. She said the team has progressed since the last match. “Everybody’s a little bit more mentally tough and ready to play from conditioning and practice.”

Arvizu won a singles match against Joni Jordan of Missouri. She said her opponent was challenging but she stuck it out to win.

“I felt I played pretty good for my first match. I got my head together and started to play better and beat her,” Arvizu said.

“The team’s coming together a lot as a group,” she added.

“I was very pleased with the doubles. Our doubles teams look much better than they did in St. Louis. Kirsten and Mollie are playing some of the best doubles that they’ve played,” said Coach Michele Conlon.

She said Mary Rumbaoa’s father died and she was unable to play in the tournament.

She said Rumbaoa plays “with a lot of fight” on the court. She said the team’s weekend theme was to imitate Rumbaoa’s style of dedicated play.

“I think that there was a collective sense to fight hard for Mary this weekend, and I think our team did do that,” Conlon said.

Conlon said matches were beneficial for the team’s experience and development.

She said one thing the players need to work on is their court presence, and need to play with “more arrogance and a stronger air.”

She said they are definitely a team that strives to improve and takes on the challenges. Because of those characterstics, she said she believes the team will continue to improve.

This weekend, Fagen, Racette and Kendra Leese are competing in the Rolex Regional Tournament in Omaha.

Leese will play in the qualifying singles on Wednesday.

On Thursday and Friday, Racette and Fagen will team up for doubles competition. Fagen will also compete in the singles tournament.

Overall, Conlon said, “I think that the players are certainly making progress in a lot of different areas.”
