The state Board of Regents gave the go-ahead for the design and budget of a significant addition to Iowa State’s College of Design Thursday.

The Regents approved the schematic design and budget for a $3 million addition designed by Baldwin White Architects of Des Moines.

The addition will bring much- needed physical and technological improvements to the college, said Mark Engelbrecht, dean of the College of Design, in a press release.

The addition will be on the southeast wall of the existing building and will face campus.

The project will feature:

  • a 250-seat auditorium for large- group coursework presentations.
  • development of an exterior plaza and improvements to the college’s atrium.
  • creation of in-studio computing areas, a distance education facility and an Office of Information Technology for faculty development.
  • construction of additional studio and shop space and development of electronically enhanced graduate studios clustered around a new college Visualization Laboratory.
